Angelina Cafe is the stuff of legends.
This one in the Rue Rivoli,
smack in the middle of tourist central
and pumping full. Only a ten minute
wait till chocolate heaven.
A good hot chocolate is

and there is extra whipped cream
for the gout free.

They were right.
By now we are used to indifferent, crap service.
Wait staff don't get tipped,
and Parisians love to bitch about them.
It's not a healthy relationship.
The belle Epoch interior makes up
for any service shortcomings.
Amorino isn't helping.
Gelato should be spelled with a "c",
then it would be the six major food groups.
You get good gelato, OK Gelato and superb.
Amorino is far too close to our apartment.
Bullion Racine has delicious gizzard free set menu and gorgeous decor.
Then there are the gizzards.
Pushed into ordering a main course
for the privilege of a seated sanctuary,
and a snotty waiter hovering overhead,
I rushed my choice.
Nice, a salad with little bits of pate fois gras.
What followed was a dish of slimy gizzard
on wilted iceberg lettuce that looked
as uncomfortable about the proximity
of gizzard as I was.
I forgot the "frais" bit.
Fresh. Fresh gizzard.
I could not lean far enough back.
Luckily the tables are so close together a fall was impossible.
I hoped for the nearest dog.
Don's roast chicken was unfathomable -
is David Lynch in the kitchen?
The thing about my beloved
is he is slow to anger, but once there
he will slice, dice and serve it up.

"If bland and shrivelled up food is your cup of tea then you will love this place. Had the chicken (something) that was the fattiest piece of meat ever tasted. Mashed potatoes with lumps and (perhaps) packet gravy. I did see a dog run past with some old bone in its mouth and I was jealous."
Like any new place after two weeks
the rose colored glasses have switched
to a more realistic shade of Camembert yellow.
Tomorrow I am off to Bordeaux Country
for 6 days with Julie Arkell, and food cooked fresh.

ah, see the charming beggars and the charming swirling flies etc etc
but French food is bliss and the countryside is so glorious and I'm still green green with envy......
hmm. my most enjoyable culinary experiences in France have been of the "prepared-by-me-and-my-daughter" kind after we have purchased supplies at a local market. each and every restaurant meal has been memorable, but not for the right reasons. despite that, i would be cautious about addressing anyone as 'putain'...i value my unbroken nose!

ReplyDeleteThank you so much for such an enjoyable post. I laughed remembering my own experience some many years ago in the City of Lights. I can laugh about it now, but at the time, it was a huge culture shock. We couldn't find anyone who could speak English (God forbid), Spanish or German, the three languages my ex and I could speak between us...very frustrating! And if we attempted to speak to them in our text book French, Oh Lord!!!!!!! LOL
ReplyDeleteAs I told a snooty elderly Parisian once, if it weren't for the Americans and Brits, her lovely little granddaughter would be speaking German!! LOL Oh well, chalk it up to part of the French experience. I love Julie Arkell's little creations...do have a wonderful time there.

The food is far too adventurous pour moi...plus I was too inhibited to buy food there, lived on bread and street food.So thank you for the photos of food, I think that I would still be happy with just bread and street food...spend my monies on more important things ...like flea market items NOT costing 400 euro. ReplyDeleteI do believe you're missing the greatest C word of all ... Creme brûlée! With a Crusty Caramelised top that Cracks open at the tap of a spoon. Oh I miss my Saint Germaine Creme brûlée!
I'm not sure I'm going to read your French posts anymore. They're making me fat just looking at them. Apparently, the "scientists" say this is possible and I don't want to test their theory.
I forgot! One patisserie open every day of the year BY LAW! You have to love the French for getting their priorities right.

ReplyDeleteAm wondering about the service in some of your eateries (yes, I know there will always be some grotty experiences? Hand on heart, when last in Paris, we were so impressed with the serivice in cafes etc. You are going to places that the locals use? The best cafe we found was tiny and next to the Gard du Est. And, when a couple of places found out we were Australian (not 'English')the wait staff fell over themselves to be helpful and try out their english on us. P'raps I am being naive and they were hoping for a large tip!

omg... you are having a wonderful visit in Paris.. the flea market images are great.. but the food images.. oooh la la! I am afraid I would be in all the bakeries and cafes in Paris and gain a lot of weight and miss some of the art.
